Dave PiXelSHift (an Introduction)

A multimedia artist and designer based in Delft, The Netherlands. He studied Communication and Multimedia Design at Willem de Kooning Academie, Rotterdam; which is now of the HRO. He started the Motion Graphics minor at the WdKA, but was demotivated by the chaos at the school and the lack of room for real development.

In real life he is a freelance webdesigner and webdeveloper, a VJ and an multimedia artist.

Approach to VJing

When he started VJing at squat parties and DnB parties in the Hague (Reaktor) somewhere in 2005, had hardly any reference and techniques to produce footage. A digital camera started to be used to produce footage and this resulted in pixelated grainy film of street art, urban life and other random subjects. Around this time he took the name PiXelSHift; because he was starting to be known for his grainy, pixellated but energetic style.

A few years later he has made and acquired a library of clips and samples which he mixes live like a DJ, sometimes using realtime audio input to trigger and control the timeline. This means he is able to VJ in his own style at different types of parties; DnB, Electro, Techno and other club styles. The themes of the clips and samples are always tweaked to the party and mission at hand. Does the audience want a dark DnB atmosphere or neon eye-candy for a kinky elektro party?

Mixing whole evenings in a club takes it's toll and in order to produce the optimal results Dave teamed up with Rash1981 in late 2007. At the time he was using a similar mixing program and since then they have made screens burn from Amsterdam, to Rotterdam and everywhere in between.

Interestingly enough Dave avoids watching regular TV and sleeping. He feels advertising and mindless sitcoms are a product of a society that force-feeds us brain numbing shows, which only serve to reduce our brain activity - they are a respite from the bustle of day to day things. He prefers to find his inspiration in books, music and heated discussions. He is cross inspired by themes or feelings in his paintings and multimedia compositions.
